Food Allergies & Diets

We live in an ever-increasing toxic society, where many foods are processed and new unnatural chemicals are being introduced to our food supplies faster than we can investigate the long-term effects on our eco systems and immune systems. With this in mind, it’s no great mystery why disease, illness, behavioural disorders and food allergies are on the rise.

Many people unknowingly suffer from food allergies which compromise their immune system and manifest as disease. Many diseases can be treated with the right diet and nutrition as well as, of course, the elimination of artificial additives. It is important to be on the right diet to allow the body to heal so it can then absorb the nutrients, become nourished and operate cohesively to provide optimum health.

There are many diets one can consider that are healing, including Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), Gluten Free, Vegan, Raw and Organic.

Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is particularly prescribed to individuals on the “Autistic Spectrum” which is an umbrella term to include symptoms of Autism, Asperger's Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Rett's Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and more. This diet is also proven to be beneficial for those who suffer from Asthma, Eczema, Epilepsy, Schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, Inflammatory Bowel conditions, Ulcerative Colitis and Chronic Diarrhoea to name a few.

SCD eliminates starches (potatoes, sweet potatoes, tapioca, etc.); grains (including wheat, rice, oats and corn); complex sugars (allows raw honey and fruit sugars); and dairy (allows goats’ milk because it doesn’t contain casein – milk protein); artificial additives; and encourages probiotics to heal the gut.

The latest scientific research confirms that micro-organisms in the gut cause digestive and brain problems. Damage to the gastro-intestinal tract can impair the brain to function properly as well as cause disease. The goal of SCD is to reduce gut inflammation (a common condition in the above mentioned illnesses) and heal the gut by starving the bad gut bugs, as well as staying away from foods requiring carbohydrate digestive enzymes (individuals on the Autistic Spectrum lack these enzymes and are commonly attacked by organisms such as clostridia and yeast). Once major yeast and bacterial overgrowth has died and associated infections are eliminated, then mal-absorption begins to decrease, gut flora is rebalanced, digestion normalises and healing begins. Research has shown an improvement in behaviour, cognitive and language development become apparent and symptoms of ASD diminish if not disappear.

SCD treats the cause of the food intolerance as a priority which inevitably diminishes the symptoms.

Gluten Free diet eliminates foods containing gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat (including kamut and spelt); barley; rye; malts; oats; and triticale. It is also used as a food additive to thicken, flavour or stabilise foods. Gluten is also known as "dextrin". The Gluten Free diet is prescribed for individuals suffering from Celiac Disease, Gastro-Intestinal Disorders, Dermatitis, Wheat Allergies and ASD (together with Casein Free Diet).

Vegan Diet is entirely a plant-based food diet including a good variety of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains. It not only eliminates animal meat but by-products such as eggs, diary and honey. The Vegan Diet has no cholesterol and is generally low in fat. Individuals subscribe to this diet usually for animal welfare or health concerns regarding the processing and treatment of meats and animal by-products. The Vegan Diet may assist those suffering from Heart Disease, Hypertension, Diabetes Type 2; lower High Cholesterol and Blood Lipid levels; and assist with Weight Loss.

Raw Food Diet is based on the belief that the most healthful food for the body is uncooked, fresh food. Heating food is also acceptable as long as the temperature stays below a certain rate and is not deemed as cooked. Cooking food is known to kill vitamins and nutrients as well as denature enzymes found in raw food. These enzymes help us to digest food and absorb nutrients. If the body does not receive enough enzymes and nutrients it becomes malnourished causing all kinds of health problems and disease. The Raw Food Diet is often recommended to assist with Anti-Aging, Weight Loss, strengthening the immune system and for overall well-being. The Raw Food Diet also promotes eating organic foods where possible.

Organic Food Diet includes a variety of natural foods grown and treated naturally without being genetically modified; treated or produced with methods using hormones or chemicals, including synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers; and are not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or chemical additives. Organic Food is known to taste better; have higher nutritional value; use better farming methods that restore the soil and protect the environment; and uses less energy than conventional food production. The Organic Food Diet is believed to provide improvements in overall health and well-being, and prevent as well as assist the treatment of all disease.
